MONUMENT TO MIKAYEL NALBANDIAN

1965

State index 1.6.133

Sculptor: Nikoghayos Nikoghosyan

Architect: Jim Torosian

The monument stands in Round Square, at the intersection of Khandjyan, Moskovyan, and Nalbandyan Streets, directly across from the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia. It honors Mikayel Nalbandyan (1829-1866), an Armenian writer, poet, philosopher, literary critic, and publicist, whose poem “The Song of the Italian Girl” (1861) inspired the anthems of the First and Third Republics of Armenia.

The monument was inaugurated on November 29, 1965. It features a 4.5-meter bronze statue of Nalbandyan, mounted on a polished granite pedestal measuring 4.5 x 5.0 meters and 0.5 meters in height. The statue depicts Nalbandyan in a proud pose, with his hands behind his back and his head held high. The sculptors have captured his likeness with pronounced individual features, creating a poetic and majestic image through restrained and cohesive forms, substantial volume, and silhouetted emphasis. The words “MIKAYEL NALBANDYAN” are engraved on a low curb behind the monument. The expansive pedestal and platform enhance the grandeur of the sculpture.

The sculpture reflects the plastic elements of Soviet Armenian art from the 1960s, showcasing the romanticism of the image with a laconic and generalized style. Harmoniously integrating with its surroundings and situated at one of the city’s central intersections, the monument to Mikayel Nalbandyan is regarded as one of the finest monuments in Yerevan.
