HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
Located
in the Circular Park.
It
is one of the capital’s most important sports centers. In 1970, the foundation
stone of the building was laid by the ninth World Chess Champion, Tigran Petrosyan.
Since
1984, the building has borne the name of the renowned chess player. The Chess
Federation of Armenia operates here.
The
volumetric-spatial composition of the building is simple and expressive. The
structure has an unusual triangular form resembling a chess rook. The façades
are faced with finely dressed Ani tuff stone.
The
main theme of the artistic decoration is chess. The façades are adorned with
seven copper chess pieces. The walls of the second-floor hall are decorated
with colorful chess-themed mosaics.
Inside
the building is a sculptural portrait of Tigran Petrosyan (1965, sculptor: Ara
Sargsyan; installed in 2014). Near the building stands his bust (1989,
sculptor: Ara Shiraz; architect: Karlen Ananyan), as well as ceramic examples
of chess pieces created by Hmayak Bdeyan.
The
Chess House is considered one of the masterpieces of Soviet modernist
architecture and the most famous work of architect Zhanna Meshcheryakova.
