HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
The building was constructed in
1958 as the administrative headquarters of the Union of Architects of Armenia
and as a House of the Architect. In 1978, during the celebrations of the 100th
anniversary of Alexander Tamanyan’s birth, it was named after the renowned
architect. On March 17, 2018, during the 19th congress of the Union of
Architects of Armenia, the organization was renamed the Chamber of Architects
of Armenia. In 1982, an additional wing was added from the courtyard side.
The building is symmetrical and
two-storied. The central entrance is emphasized by a colonnaded portico, which
forms the balustrade of the open balcony on the second floor. Two projecting
side risalits form corner covered tympanum-loggias, enriching the architectural
composition.
The central part and the
risalits are завершed with a delicate dentil cornice. National architectural
forms (cornices, capitals) are used in the plastic design.
The building is constructed of
dark purple tuff, while the capitals are made of light yellow felsite.
The floor plan is simple: an
entrance hall at the main entry, a cloakroom in the basement, and a hall with a
foyer on the second floor. The side volumes of the first floor house the
premises of the Union of Architects, while the second floor contains exhibition
halls. It is one of the most important public buildings in Yerevan.
Artistically, it is characteristic of 1950s architecture. It stands out for its
well-resolved spatial planning and finely sculpted architectural details.
