RESIDENTIAL HOUSE OF ARAM MANUKYAN
1910
Formerly: FADEY
KALANTARYAN’S INCOME-GENERATING HOUSE
It
is located on Aram Street (formerly Tsarakan, Spandaryan Street). On this site
there once stood a single-story adobe house belonging to Nubar Yeghiazaryan,
which he sold in August 1904 to Fadey Tayir Kalantaryan, a respected citizen
and wealthy merchant of Yerevan. The present two-story building with a basement
was constructed in 1910.
In
December 1917, the prominent public, political, and military figure Aram
Manukyan moved from Tiflis to Yerevan. He was one of the organizers of the 1915
Defense of Van, a member of the ARF (Dashnaktsutyun) party, and an authorized
representative of the Armenian National Council. The population of the city
welcomed him with great enthusiasm, and Fadey Kalantaryan donated his two-story
income-generating house to Aram Manukyan.
From
late December 1917 until January 1919, the time of his death, he lived in this
house with his family and died here. His widow, Katarine Zalyan-Manukyan, a
deputy of the parliament of the First Republic of Armenia and a physician,
continued to live in this house with their daughter Seda for several more
years. From 1920, the house was also inhabited by the third Prime Minister of
the First Republic of Armenia, Hamo Ohanjanyan, with his family.
The
house consists of a main building (dimensions: 16.9 × 13.5 m) and an auxiliary
wing. It features a balcony with decorative wrought-iron railings and a passage
from the street leading to the courtyard. Since the 1990s, the building has
been in an emergency state. In the early 2000s, it was included in the
investment program for the “Old Yerevan” complex. A basalt memorial plaque
dedicated to Aram Manukyan is installed on the main facade.
The
building is valuable as a monument of early 20th-century Yerevan architecture.
