BARRACKS COMPLEX – RUSSIAN MILITARY GARRISON
Second half of the 19th century – early 20th century
State index: 1.6.76.2
The complex is located on the
left bank of the Hrazdan River, in the area of the former Yerevan Fortress.
After the capture of the Yerevan Fortress on October 1, 1827, Russian troops
used it for some time as a garrison. The fortress was officially abolished as a
military stronghold in 1864; however, the garrison remained as a strategic base
and a control point of the main transport routes under the Tsarist
administration.
In the early period, some of
the fortress structures continued to be used, while in the 1850s–1880s they
were gradually demolished and replaced by newly built facilities serving the
needs of the Russian garrison, including residential, military, educational,
and other purposes (second half of the 19th century – early 20th century). In
2018, the operation of the Russian barracks complex was discontinued.
The entrance to the complex is
located at the northern guard post. The complex includes a large parade ground,
a reservoir, a swimming pool, and a park. In the 1990s, memorials dedicated to
the victims of the Artsakh liberation war (“Immortal Eagle”) and to fallen
special forces personnel were installed.
The complex is enclosed by
walls and includes about twenty buildings. Two of them are two-storey, while
the rest are single-storey. The buildings, arranged at certain distances and
with rectangular layouts, were used as barracks, ammunition and food warehouses,
headquarters, club, hospital, dining hall, and for other purposes.
All buildings share uniform
architectural solutions for their facades and are constructed from a
combination of gray, black, and brown tuff stone.
