VLADIMIR BRAZHNIKOV MANSION
Early 20th century
Located at the intersection of
Abovyan and Heratsi Streets. It belonged to Vladimir Osipovich Brazhnikov,
director of Yerevan’s Classical Male Gymnasium, chairman of the Pedagogical
Council of the Hripsime Female Gymnasium, and honorary justice of the peace.
In 1895, Brazhnikov purchased a
plot of land at the end of Abovyan Street (formerly Astafyan Street), where at
the beginning of the 20th century he built a single-story house designed by
Vasily Mirzoyan. The house was nationalized in 1922. Later, it was assigned to
the city’s First Hospital, for which a second floor was added in the 1920s. In
1925, the Geological Museum of Yerevan State University was opened there.
During the 1950s–1970s, the building housed the Institutes of Archaeology and
Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. It is built of black
Yerevan tuff.
