ARMENIAN NATIONAL AGRARIAN UNIVERSITY
1932,1940,1956
Formerly: ARMENIAN
AGRICULTURAL ACADEMY
The university is located
between Abovyan and Teryan Streets, in Viktor Hambardzumyan Park. The
construction of the main building was carried out in two stages: from 1932 to
1940 separate sections of the building were constructed, while the unfinished
parts were completed between 1953 and 1956.
In 1976, a new building
designed by architect N. Trofimov (Moscow) was constructed on the northern side
of the main building. From Teryan Street, it is connected to the original
building by a second-floor passageway.
The main building is a
large-scale structure (165 × 43 m). It has a layout typical of university
buildings, including lecture halls, offices, laboratories, and other
facilities. The façades are decorated with a row of pilasters extending along
the height of the building, whose capitals incorporate traditional Armenian
ornamental motifs. The structure is built using a combination of rough-hewn and
polished basalt.
In front of the southern main
façade, a memorial fountain dedicated to the institute members who died in
World War II was erected in 1985 (state index: 1.6.2.1, architect: Aslan Mkhitaryan).
It is made of red polished tuff stone. The composition is based on a highly
stylized image of an ear of wheat symbolizing life.
