MONUMENT TO KAREN DEMIRCHYAN
2023
Sculptor: Sargis Babayan
Architect:
Levon Arakelyan
The statue of Karen Demirchyan, an Armenian political and state figure, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (1974-1988), Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia (1999), National Hero of Armenia (posthumously, 1999), has been erected in front of the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan, in the area adjacent to Leningradyan Street. The solemn unveiling of the statue took place on September 9, 2023, during events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the complex's construction.
The decision to place K. Demirchyan’s statue in Yerevan was made back in
2014. It was decided to place the statue in the area adjacent to Mashtots
Avenue. The sculptor was Tigran Arzumanyan (architect: Hayk Asatryan, height:
3.7 m, material: white marble from Artsakh). The monument was supposed to be
unveiled on the anniversary of Karen Demirchyan's assassination, October 27.
However, later another date was accepted - April 17, 2016 (Demirchyan’s
birthday), then April 17, 2017 (his 85th birthday). Tigran Arzumanyan’s statue
was never installed, as according to circulating rumors, it was not liked by
Demirchyan's family members.
Eventually, it was decided to install a completely new statue in front
of the Sports and Concerts Complex. The sculptor of the new statue is Sargis
Babayan, and the architect is Levon Arakelyan.
K. Demirchyan is sculpted in motion characteristic of his persona,
walking towards the people. The statue is cast in bronze, 3.6 m high, the
height of the pedestal is 1.4-1.6 m, it has the form of an inclined platform
similar to the stairs of the complex.
The statue is a tribute to the Armenian figure.
