SQUARES AND PARKS
FRIDTJOF NANSEN PARK
2012
The park is located in the
First Residential District of the Nor Nork administrative district, on Fridtjof
Nansen Street.
The main area of the park is
separated from Gai Avenue by Suren Nazaryan Park, where the monument to Gay
(Hayk Bzhshkyants) stands on a high pedestal (1977, sculptor: Suren Nazaryan;
architect: Sargis Gurzadyan).
Within the framework of events
dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Fridtjof Nansen—the
Norwegian polar explorer, scientist, diplomat, Nobel Prize laureate, High
Commissioner for Refugees of the League of Nations, and great friend of the Armenian
people—the construction of the memorial complex began in 2012 with the
groundbreaking ceremony for the Fridtjof Nansen Museum (architect: Albert
Sokhikyan). Subsequently, the small Holy Mother of God Church and the parish
house were built nearby (architects: Albert and Artashes Sokhikyan; builder:
Yuri Avagyan). The construction was financed by the Honored Doctors of the
Republic of Armenia, Karlen and Sara Yesayan. The museum was inaugurated and
the church was consecrated on October 12, 2014.
The memorial complex features
about thirty sculptures dedicated to the history of the Armenian people,
distinguished Armenians, and friends of the Armenian people.
