SQUARES AND PARKS
The
Botanical Garden is located on Acharyan Street. It is one of the major park and
garden complexes in Yerevan and covers an area of 80 hectares between the
Kanaker and Nor Nork heights. The garden was founded in 1935 and was
reconstructed between 1945 and 1950 according to the design of architect Hrayr
Isabekyan.
The
main entrance is from the Kanaker side and is connected by a wide avenue to the
entrance from Myasnikyan Avenue.
In
the central part of the garden there is a small rose garden. South of the
intersection of the main axes, two administrative buildings were constructed.
The garden pathways were designed with special attention to ensuring good
visibility of the plants.
The
collection includes Armenia’s wild, medicinal, fruit, and many other tree
species, around 200 species of wild relatives of cultivated plants, about 70
rare and endangered plant species, as well as tropical and subtropical plants.
Since
2008, the garden has hosted a Paleobotanical museum, which presents the
biodiversity of fossil plants in Armenia, including specimens of maples, oaks,
and poplars, as well as a wide variety of modern plane tree leaves in terms of
shape and size.
