Located in the northern part of the intersection of Nalbandyan Street and Main Avenue, adjacent to Republic Square. Designers created it in 1975. Builders began construction in 1981. Until 1991, they called it the “Lenin Square” station.
Designers created a harmonious connection between the station complex and Republic Square. In the structure, they separated low-rise, step-like horizontal platforms starting from the sidewalk level. Staircases smoothly lead from the sidewalk to a semi-open courtyard measuring 52 x 46 m from three sides, in the center of which is a circular, luxuriously designed fountain. The fountain system comprises 40 fan-shaped basins, the diameter of which gradually decreases towards the center, resembling a rosette. The roof of the semi-open courtyard opens above the fountain in the form of eight unique “petals.” Designers decorated the side parts of the “petals” with floral ornaments and bird images.
Conical reinforced concrete columns arranged around the perimeter of the opening, side walls, and a stone wall with an arcade support the reinforced concrete beam ceiling. Builders lined the walls, stairs, and floor of the semi-open courtyard with dark red tuff from Byurakan. Three escalators descend from the lobby to the platform. Designers separated the main hall with triple arched colonnades from the right and left platforms. They faced the main hall with white marble. Builders paved the floor with red granite. Designers closed the opening opposite the entrance to the hall, where the second exit is planned, with mirrored panels.
