ARTISTS’ RESIDENTIAL HOUSE

It is located in the district situated within the Mashtots Avenue, Isahakyan and Moskovyan streets, at 48 of the M. Mashtots Avenue. The author of the project is an Honored Artist of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR), the USSR State Prize Laureate, Chief Architect of Yerevan (1937-1951) Mark Vladimir Grigoryan (1900-1978).

The projection of the house was launched in 1937, while the construction was completed in 1942. The building is four-storey. The main space of the building stands on the Mashtots Avenue, while the others are on the Moskovyan and Isahakyan Streets. The 2nd and 4th floors operate as apartments. In total, it consists of 52 apartments. Various architectural manners typical of classic style are used. As building materials mostly served gray basalt and pink felsite. One of the favorite cafes of Yerevanian people, “Mijancahovik” was located on the ground floor of the building. The house of the art workers and the “Soviet Art”’s magazine editorial office were also located here.

It was constructed exactly for actors and art workers. Prominent masters and cultural figures of the Armenian stage lived here. On the façade of the building are installed memorial boards dedicated to Hrachya Nersisyan, Shara Talyan, Vavik Vardanyan, Davith Malyan, Gurgen Gabrielyan, Ashot Satyan, Mikayel Maluntcyan, Vagarsh Vagharshyan, Ashot Avetyan, S. Stepanyan.

The artists’ house is one of the interesting buildings of Yerevan of the 1930-1950s.
