MONUMENTS
OLD AND NEW MALATIAS
1973
State index: 1.7.4
Architect: Felix Zargaryan
The
monument dedicated to the victims from the city of Malatia who died
during the Armenian Genocide in 1915. It is
located in a park not far from the Saint Virgin Mary Church in Malatia-Sebastia
administrative district.
The
residents of the district, many of whom are descendants of immigrants from old
Malatia, called their district New Malatia and erected the monument in honor of
the old and new, reborn Malatias.
The
monument consists of two walls with a complex, stepped configuration. The
symmetrical protrusions of the line, which form the multi-profile high relief
with rich light and shadows of the wall, the gradual increase in the volume of
the stone towards the center, the stepped silhouettes, the bright red color of
the building stone have created an expressive plastic structure. There are
facades on the seats.
The
monument has a unique architectural feature - the gradual and consistent
exposure of the walls. The dynamic characteristic embodied in the spiral
composition forces the viewer to rotate around the monument, look at it from
all sides, from every point of perception it opens up new edges of the image,
new perspectives, new resonance of its parts. It is made of red polished tuff.
