MONUMENTS
MUSE OF CYBERNETICS
1972
It is located on the territory
of the Yerevan Research Institute of Mathematical Machines (Mergelyan
Institute). The sculpture was commissioned by the Mergelyan Institute.
The Artistic Council did not
approve its installation; however, the sculpture was installed nonetheless. It
was initially planned to be placed in the park opposite the institute, but was
later moved to the institute’s inner courtyard in order to limit the number of
viewers.
The sculpture depicts a muse in
a calm, semi-recumbent position, seemingly in a state of meditation. In some
areas she is covered with a veil, while in others fragments of mechanisms,
wires, and springs emerge from her body. The muse is either in the process of
acquiring skin or is slowly decaying and shedding it. Only the main axis of her
skeletal body remains preserved.
This semi-real, semi-imaginary
figure is placed on an Armenian karas (clay vessel), from which a gentle stream
of water was intended to flow.
