SQUARES AND PARKS
KOMITAS PARK
1930s
Komitas
Park is one of the first parks in Yerevan. It is located in the Shengavit
administrative district, extending from the edge of Arshakunyats Avenue to the
Hrazdan Gorge.
The
original design of the park was developed by architect Mikayel Mazmanyan, and
later by architect Sargis Karapetyan. The dendrological project was developed
in 1938 by architects B. Edilyan and H. Petrosyan.
Later,
a cinema was built in the park (architect: Koryun Hakobyan). The park is
surrounded by a fence designed by Mikayel Mazmanyan.
The
park is spacious, with landscaped alleys, benches, and recreation areas. The
park’s metal fence and stone-built entrance are distinguished by their artistic
design.
Located
within the park are the bronze bust of Shushanik Kurghinyan (installed on the
poetess’s grave in 1952; architect: Jim Torosyan, sculptor: Sargis
Baghdasaryan), the monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian
Relief Society (2011, sculptor: Gevorg Gevorgyan), the “Zoravar Andranik”
Fedayee Movement Museum (2006), as well as the Komitas Museum-Institute
(located in the renovated former House of Culture building, architect: Arthur
Meschyan).
A
pantheon was established in one part of the park in 1936. The remains of
renowned Armenian scholars, cultural figures, and public and political figures
are buried here.
