MONUMENT TO FRITJOF NANSEN

2011

Sculptor: Garegin Davtyan

Architect: Aslan Mkhitaryan

The bust of the famous Norwegian polar explorer, scientist, diplomat, outstanding humanist, Nobel Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen is located in the Circular Park, at the intersection of Abovyan and Moskovyan streets. During the years of the Armenian Genocide, thanks to Nansen, thousands of Armenian refugees received an identity document, which was later to be called the "Nansen passport". The bust of the great friend of the Armenian people was installed within the framework of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

The monument is presented in the form of a turbulent, dynamic composition, which emphasizes his deep, voluminous image. The pedestal resembles an iceberg, symbolizing the scientific expedition led by Nansen to the North Pole.
