VARDAVAR

Vardavar, the Feast of the Transfiguration of Jesus, is the third of the five major feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Church and is celebrated 98 days after Easter. The feast is connected with the New Testament episode when Jesus Christ was transfigured while praying on Mount Tabor before his apostles — Saint Peter, James the Apostle, and John the Apostle. On this occasion, the Holy Liturgy is served in all Armenian Apostolic churches.
Among the Armenian people the feast is also known as Vardavar and has ancient pre-Christian roots. According to tradition, after the flood Noah sprinkled water on the members of his family as a sign of remembrance and blessing.
Vardavar is a celebration of joy, songs, dances, and water games. During the festival, processions, folk games, and various events are organized, while the tradition of splashing water on one another symbolizes purification, renewal, and shared happiness.
