MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN TO THE VICTIMS OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE AND THE DECEMBER 7, 1988 SPITAK EARTHQUAKE
1990
State index: 1.6.108
Architect: Aslan Mkhitaryan
The memorial
stands at 15 Koryun Street. Students funded its construction in the courtyard
of the former Agricultural Institute's dormitory buildings. It commemorates the
victims of the Armenian Genocide, the December 7, 1988 earthquake, and those
who died in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).
A vertically erected memorial column sits on a pedestal atop a low rectangular platform. The design features a symmetrical composition: memorial walls in the shape of a truncated triangle unite through a large, simple cross stretching along the central axis. The memorial walls bear the engraving:
REMEMBER ARMENIAN GENOCIDE 1915
THE WAR
VICTIMS 1988 EARTHQUAKE
Simple crosses adorn the upper right section. Two triangular openings on either side of the cross's lower arm lighten the monument's structure. The pedestal features a pair of small fountains (currently non-operational). Crafted from gray basalt, the monument stands out for its grandeur and simplicity.
