MONUMENT OF FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN YEREVAN AND CARRARA CITIES
1964
State index: 1.6.107
Architect: Rafael Israelyan
Sculptor: Ara Harutyunyan
It is a decorative monument. The authors are talented Armenian artists of the Soviet period: Honored Art Worker of the USSR, Honored Architect, National Architect of the USSR Rafael Israelyan and sculptor, National Artist of the USSR, Academician of the Academy of Fine Arts of Russia Ara Harutyunyan. It was created in 1964. It was installed in the Circular Park in 1965 between Isahakyan, Moskovyan and Teryan streets. Similar to Armenian khachkar in style, the frontal plane of the 3.10 m high monument is decorated with sculptures typical of Armenian medieval jewelry: bunches of grapes, rosettes, and mermaids. The sculptures of rams with spiral horns placed on both sides of the monument remind of the arts of the unique Armenian ram-shaped tombstones of the XV-XVII centuries. Rams are sculptured (plant ornaments, rider, flower sculpture).
It was made of Yerevanian tuff. The monument, with a slight difference, repeats the monument, that Yerevan dedicated to Carrara, Italy, as a symbol of friendship between the two sister cities (it was installed in Carrara in 1967, red tuff).
