The Guises of the Nude

Perceptions of Nudity in Armenian Graphic Arts
🖼️ The exhibition "The Guises of the Nude", bringing together over 100 examples of graphic art from the collection of the 🏛️National Gallery of Armenia, is an attempt to extract the representational diversity of nudity in Armenian art from the shadows of puritanical art-historical narratives.
📃 In contrast to customary assumptions, the nude has been consistently present in Armenian art from the emergence of Armenian academic painting in the 1840s to our days. The exhibition outlines this history by indicating the key thematic and theoretical interests that have occupied artists in Armenia and the diaspora throughout this period.
Whether erotic or tragic, idealized or abject, the nude served as a key for 'frankness' in their works, stimulating a surprising range of formal and conceptual inquiries on human beliefs, sexuality, imagination, and socio-cultural reality. The focus on graphic arts here allows us to see these intellectual and emotional expressions of candor in their most vibrant and uninhibited form.
🔎In contemporary Armenian art, no longer just a 'symbol' or a screen for our desires, the Nude wears diverse guises. It is as a critical method for affirming multiple ways of seeing and speaking about the constantly changing social, sexual and cultural experiences of being in the world.
